About the national park

Jomfruland National Park is a marine national park. A large part of the area of 117,000 hectares is sea and seabed. The national park is 27 kilometers long and is located on the outer part of the coast in Kragerø. Parts of Jomfruland and Stråholmen, Stangnes on the mainland and one hundred and sixty islets make up the land area.
The national park includes productive sea areas, rich biodiversity and beautiful landscapes. Raet dominates the entire length of the national park, both in the sea and on land. The pebble beach outside Jomfruland is almost seven kilometers long and the longest open pebble beach in the Skagerrak area. In several places on the islets and at Stangnes, there are nice, even rocks and potholes.

Welcome to Jomfruland National Park

Jomfruland is easily accessible by ferry from Kragerø. We recommend walking and taking your time, but you can bring your bike on the ferry or rent one at the tower pier at Jomfruland. There are taxi boats from Kragerø and Valle in Bamble that can take you to any place where they can dock.
If you have your own boat, you can visit the publicly protected outdoor areas. With a small boat or kayak and calm weather, you can dock almost anywhere. By car from the landside, you can visit Stangnes or Portør.

Experiences

In Jomfruland National Park you can experience, learn, do activities or just relax in beautiful landscapes and rich nature. The park is perfect for boating, kayaking, hiking, birdwatching and photography - as well as diving, swimming and fishing. Fishing and hunting are permitted, and the kelp forests are teeming with life. There are cod, saithe, pollack and flatfish - and of course shells, crabs and lobsters. In the summer months, the Kragerø archipelago is bustling with boating activity, with many boat tourists visiting the national park. Jomfruland is particularly popular, but Stråholmen, the other islets and Stangnes on the mainland are also very popular. A total of 22 land areas in the national park are secured for the general public for outdoor recreation. Most people visit the national park in the spring and early summer, but it also offers great experiences in the fall and winter.

The marine national park

The national park stretches from the border with Risør in the south-west to the border with Bamble in the north-east, and covers 117 square kilometers of coastal nature. 98% of the area is sea and seabed, kelp forest and eelgrass meadows. The glacial deposit, the raet, which runs through the entire national park, has created particularly favorable growth conditions for both land and marine plants. This is why Jomfruland and Stråholmen appear to be particularly productive islands, and in the sea there are similarly favorable conditions for a diversity of marine life - a productive sea.
