In 2024, the Jomfruland National Park Board conducted a survey of invasive species on Jomfruland. The survey was carried out by NIBIO (Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research).

Invasive species pose a threat to the unique biodiversity on Jomfruland. Parts of Jomfruland are designated as a national park, but the entire island is included in the Selected Cultural Landscapes scheme. It is therefore important to gain knowledge about which species are present, where they are found, and what level of risk they represent.
The survey focuses on 27 non-native plant species. Some of these were newly recorded, while others were already known. Several species with a very high risk of spreading in nature were identified. Some species that have not yet been risk assessed may nevertheless pose a threat to biodiversity.
An action plan has now been developed to combat the invasive species. The plan prioritizes the species that pose the greatest risk.
What can you do as a member of the public?
- Avoid planting non-native species in your garden.
- Remove non-native species from your garden and dispose of the waste properly. You can read more about proper handling on the Norwegian Environment Agency’s website.
- Do not dispose of garden waste in nature.
- Report sightings of invasive species at www.artsobservasjoner.no.
- Participate in volunteer efforts to remove invasive species.
