Welcome to Jomfruland National Park! Like all other protected areas in Norway, special rules apply in the protected area, which means that you may not be able to do the same things here as elsewhere in nature. The purpose of the national park is to preserve a rich and varied natural environment. To ensure this, we need to adapt activity and use so that nature is not unnecessarily damaged. Here we have collected a bunch of frequently asked questions about traffic and activity in Jomfruland National Park:

Can I light a campfire in Jomfruland National Park?

It is forbidden to light fires directly on the ground in the national park, all year round. It is also forbidden to use disposable barbecues and other grills if they can damage the surface. Pebbles, vegetation and surfaces are damaged by the fire.

Can I bring my dog to Jomfruland National Park?

Yes, you can bring your dog into the national park, but the dog must always be on a leash. The national park has a rich bird and animal life that is vulnerable to disturbance. It is therefore important that all visitors respect the leash rule. Dog feces must be bagged and disposed of in waste bins. Bags of dog waste should not be thrown into the wild!

Can I walk everywhere in the national park?

With a few exceptions, the right of public access applies in Jomfruland National Park, but also remember the public access obligations.

Jomfruland National Park also has 15 areas of particular importance for nesting birds. In these areas, it is forbidden to go ashore and travel closer than 50 meters from land between 15 April and 15 July. The areas are marked in red at the bottom of the map of Jomfruland National Park.

Can I fly a drone in Jomfruland National Park?

No, it is forbidden to fly model airplanes and drones within Jomfruland National Park. The board of the national park can, upon application, grant permission to fly a drone. Persons with permission to fly drones must always bring a permit from the national park board. The Norwegian Nature Inspectorate carries out inspections.

Can I use a bicycle in Jomfruland National Park?

Cycling on paths and roads in Jomfruland National Park is permitted with an ordinary bicycle. However, we ask that you do not cycle out to the bird tower and further out into the meadow north of Øytangen Farm. Bicycle parking has been established at the gate to Øytangen Farm.

Can I use an electric bike in Jomfruland National Park?

As a starting point, electric bicycles (pedal bicycles with an electric motor) are prohibited in the national park. It is permitted to use electric bicycles (not electric park bicycles) on the main road from the gate to the oak forest and up to Øytangen farm. It is not permitted to use electric bicycles on other paths and roads in Jomfruland National Park.

Electric scooters are considered motorized vehicles in protected areas and are not permitted to be used on paths and roads in the national park. Motorized traffic in the national park requires permission from the management authority and landowner.

Can I use an electric park bike in the national park?

No, electric scooters are motor vehicles and all use of electric scooters is prohibited. The Norwegian Nature Inspectorate carries out checks.

Can I camp in Jomfruland National Park?

With certain restrictions, it is permitted to pitch and stay overnight in tents and hammocks in Jomfruland National Park. The rules for camping follow the Outdoor Recreation Act, which states that you can pitch a tent for up to two days in the same place if you are more than 150 meters from an inhabited house or cabin.

Tents, camouflage devices and hammocks are not permitted north and west of Øytangen farm, at Sandbakken and on cultivated land and pastures at Jomfruland. Tents of any kind are also prohibited in the national park and landscape conservation areas at Stråholmen and all zone B areas (bird sanctuaries).

Can I make fixed mooring bolts for boats in the national park?

It is not permitted to drill holes for new mooring bolts in the national park without the approval of the national park board. This includes all measures that involve damage to rocks such as the establishment of diving boards, bathing ladders, boat moorings, etc.

Protecting plants and wildlife

Animals, plants, landscapes and geology are protected against any form of intervention. Wildlife is also protected against unnecessary disturbance. Jomfruland National Park has a number of rare and endangered plants that are forbidden to pick. We encourage everyone to use established paths and roads. Bicycles may only be used on established paths and roads in the national park.

It is not permitted to pitch tents west of Øytangen farm, on Sandbakken, cultivated land and inland pastures on Jomfruland and in the bird sanctuaries.
