Jomfruland National Park Board conducted a survey of alien species on Jomfruland in 2024. The survey was conducted by NIBIO (Norwegian Institute for Bioeconomy).

Read the report Mapping the distribution and risk of spread of alien species in Jomfruland.

The alien species pose a threat to the special natural diversity of Jomfruland. Parts of Jomfruland are a national park, but the entire island is included in the Selected Cultural Landscapes scheme. It is therefore important to gain knowledge about which species exist, where they are found and what risk they pose.

The survey focuses on 27 alien plant species. Some of these were new discoveries, while others were already known. Some species were found with a very high risk of spreading in nature. Some species were also found that have not been risk assessed, but which can still constitute a

a threat to biodiversity.

An action plan has now been drawn up to combat the alien species. The action plan prioritizes the species that pose the greatest risk.

What can you as an audience do?

  1. Avoid planting alien species in your garden.
  2. Remove alien species from your garden and handle waste properly. You can read more about proper handling on the website of the Norwegian Environment Agency .
  3. Do not throw garden waste into nature.
  4. Report discoveries of alien species at www.artsobservasjoner.no .
  5. Participate in volunteer efforts to remove alien species.
